Rob is combining his Audi driving duties in the British Touring Car Championship with a cameo appearance in the Hollywood drama being made about the epic and near-tragic struggle between James Hunt and Niki Lauda for Formula One’s 1976 world crown.
Provisionally entitled Rush, the movie includes the chilling scene when Lauda crashes in flames at the Nurburgring in his Ferrari, which is turned into a fireball when it is rammed by American racer Brett Lunger’s Surtees. That very same Surtees — restored in its original Campari colours — is now owned by Rob’s dad Richard and raced in historic events by Austin Jnr.
So when renowned director Ron Howard wanted a driver and a car to recreate those shocking scenes, there was only one man to call. Rob — who scored a fantastic second place with his Audi tourer at the recent Rockingham BTCC meeting — has already been out to Germany to drive the Surtees for film shoots.
SunSport caught up with him at The Rock to ask how he is enjoying his star-spangled brush with Tinseltown.
